R A and Osteoarthritis?

by Robert
(Phoenix, AZ)

I am a 52 year old male. I was diagnose with RA about a year and half ago.

The feeling of stiffness in the morning and my hands feeling swollen were my first symptoms. Then for no reason at all the joint below my fourth right finger starting hurting, a lot. I could not shake hands with anyone because the slightest amount of pressure would cause a lot of pain. Well my Rhuemalologist prescribed methotrexate and diclofenac. That seem to work on limiting my joint pain but did nothing for the flu like symptoms. The fatigue I experience is intense. I usually have to take a 3-4 hour nap. Then after the fatigue comes the swelling of the hands and feet. Recently my left knee started hurting. Very painful to walk. So my Dr recommends an MRI. Results showed torn meniscus, bruised bone (femur), and deformity of that same bone. Apparently the cartilage had been eaten away on the inner third of my knee. I am now awaiting surgery to have a Partial Knee Replacement. RA makes old injuries pop up also. Back injury in 1988 suddenly popped up causing severe pain when I walked. I had surgery to reduce the disc between the 4th and 5th Lumbar vertebrate. They had to cut away some bone also to get to that disc. Problem solved for now. Biggest changes have been my hands and feet always feel like they're swollen. The fatigue is just so bad. I just awoke from a 3 hour nap. My girlfriend doesn't understand. She left to walk the dog without saying a word. Probably won't last long. My question is, is it possible to have both R A and Osteoarthritis? The knee problem seems like Osteoarthritis since it only affects part of the knee. RA normally affects the entire joint. Any help with that question would be greatly appreciated.

Post about to R A and Osteoarthritis many detail for surgery. The results of these procedures vary considerably among patients. Clinical and experimental work has shown the important influence of loading and motion on the healing of particular cartilage and joints.

R A does not affect the cartilage. It affects the synovial fluid and then an enzyme attacks the bone itself. Your joints might feel achy and tender, but you may not see any.

Something helped me with r.a.
by: Emilyette

I have rheum. arthritis. I was told 20 yrs. ago that I had arthritis, no other explanation and I ignored it. Recently had a bad bout and spent almost 4 weeks on my back. Doc. said pretty bad. Took some pills and broke out badly.
Decided to try to do something about it on my own so read a lot on the net.
My knees were swollen and my fingers were taking turns aching and trying to change direction on me. I found that when I rubbed Medi Paws, an oil made from the seeds of marijuana plant ( no thc.)
my joints stopped aching within seconds.
Then found something that surprised me. I read about wheat having inflammation symptoms in your system, so I stopped eating wheat, made coconut flour bread instead, and surprise! The swelling in my knees went down to almost normal. I hadn't done anything else except those 2 things. If someone else decides to try this let me know if it works for you.

RA and Osteo
by: Susan

Yes, it is very common to have both RA and Osteo Arthritis. One (RA) is a disease that effects the joints where Osteo is wear and tear on the joints.

I recommend, a good diet, removing foods that you are perhaps intolerant to and high quality supplements to feed the joints and lots of water, don't want to be dehydrated at any time because this intensifies the pain.
