July 2008 Garden Schedule

Working in harmony with nature provides us the opportunity to reduce the workload in our gardens.

Most of us are aware of the effects of the position of the moon in relation to moods or the tide. Today I’m going to introduce you to the relation between the moon and plant life.

Moon Cycles

Every month we have one full moon and one new moon. After the new moon where the moon is dark it will start to grow bigger (called waxing) until it reaches, after about 2 weeks, the stage of a Full Moon. This is where the moon is at it’s brightest and after this it begins to shrink again (called weaning).

The moon pulls the tide, and our minds, but it also pulls the sap in the plants. When the moon grows, the waxing stage, all the sap is going to the top half, or exposed part of the plant, this is most potent on a full moon.

On the other side, when the moon is growing smaller (weaning) all the sap in the plant will go to the roots, (the hiden part of the plant). Again, most potent on a New Moon.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND HOW CAN THIS HELP US IN GARDENING?

With the above in mind we can schedule our gardening tasks to get the most efficiency out of everything we do and the following information is intended to help make this easy to follow.
